How we do it
A consumer unit is the box that decides what happens when something goes wrong. The old ones, with rewireable fuses or one RCD across the whole house, were fine for their day. The trouble is that a single fault on the kitchen sockets can plunge the whole house into darkness, and a fuse wire does nothing about the slow earth leakage that starts fires.
A modern board gives every circuit its own RCBO: a breaker and an RCD in one. A fault on the shower trips the shower, and the lights stay on while you find the torch. On most Leicester semis we fit one in a day with the power off for about five hours.
Before the new board goes live we test every circuit coming into it. That is the part a cheap quote skips, and it is where the surprises are. If we find a fault, you hear about it with the reading in front of you, and the price to fix it, before we do anything more.

Common questions
Do I need a new consumer unit if nothing is tripping?
Not always. If your board has an RCD protecting the sockets and passes its tests, it can stay. We will tell you if it is fine rather than sell you one.
Why did my old board not trip and the new one does?
A modern board protects against earth leakage the old one never saw. If an existing circuit has a fault, the new board finds it on day one. We test every circuit before we switch over, so you know about it before we leave.
Will I need to be out of the house?
No, but the power is off for most of the day. Fridges and freezers are fine for five hours if you keep the doors shut. We restore lighting circuits first.
